Anne Geenen splits up Case Design and co-founds Site Practice with 6a architects associate David Schmidt

Site Practice
Since its inception in 2013, and during five years of fruitful collaboration between its two partners Anne Geenen and Samuel Barclay, Case Design has grown to a practice of 16 talented architects and designers with projects in India, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
In light of new opportunities, both partners are now moving into separate practices and Anne Geenen is starting a new studio called Site Practice, co-founded with former 6a architects associate David Schmidt, whilst Samuel Barclay will continue to operate solo under the name Case Design.
Site Practice
Both Anne and David come from backgrounds in architecture that give considerate care and attention to how things are built, what materials are used, and how environmental issues are addressed. Combining their experiences, they continue to work on projects focusing on craftsmanship and materiality and exploring the design process through acts of making and collaboration. Based in Mumbai and Amsterdam, the studio is currently working on projects in India, South-East Asia and Europe. Photography: Ariel Huber

'A School in the Making' opens at the Venice Biennale

Site Practice
Anne Geenen and Samuel Barclay have been invited to exhibit at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale Architettura di Venezia 2018, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. Their exhibition 'A School in the Making' opens to the public on 26 May and is a response to the curatorial theme Freespace , and shows the collaborative effort put into designing and building the Avasara Academy in Pune, India.
Settled into the valley slope above the small village of Lavale and still a work-in-process, Avasara Academy is a residential school for young women in western India. Drawing on the resources, energy and enthusiasm generated by the Biennale Architettura 2018 the exhibition shows the work that has already been made and more importantly it creates new spaces, objects, and ideas for the school. Initially presented in Venice, these proposals will eventually find their way home to the campus and the students for which they were imagined.

Anne Geenen in conversation at Columbia GSAPP

Site Practice
Anne Geenen talks about how having a base in India inspires the practice’s work and how they try to make projects that are appropriate to the location where they are being built.
"The main influence in our practice, in our way of working, are the things we see around us – the informal structures, the inventiveness and creativity, the materials, and the craftsmanship that are still very present in India."
The podcast expands the conversation beyond the Constructing Practice symposium at Columbia GSAPP on 17 November 2017. Organised by professor Juan Herreros with Enrique Walker, the symposium traced the narratives of 15 firms from around the world that were established in the past 10 years. Other guests included, amongst others, Terrain Architects (Tokyo), Zeller & Moye (Mexico City/Berlin), MAIO (Barcelona), Local Studio (Johannesburg), Bruther (Paris), Something Fantastic (Berlin) and Ultramoderne (Providence). Groothandelsgebouw Offices
2019, Rotterdam

Situated within an iconic post-war monument in the centre of Rotterdam, the offices are designed to house the flexible and multifunctional workspaces of a funding organisation for the creative industries in the Netherlands. Located on the fifth floor overlooking a courtyard on one side and the city on the other, the work environment is envisioned as a hub supporting the creative industry.

With a range of meeting rooms and informal gathering spaces employees and guests can share ideas and discuss work in a variety of ways and settings. More secluded rooms offer space for work that requires focus and concentration without being distracted.
Site Practice
The central room becomes the focal point of the offices, connecting adjacent work spaces and meeting rooms along the facades. Housing all kinds of activities, it ensures for a flexibility of use that the organisation requires. By opening or closing sliding walls, rooms can either become part of the central hall or be separated for more seclusion.

The flexibility and innovation that is characteristic of the organisation is further expressed in the choices of materials and details. Surrounded by the characteristic concrete of the fifties building, simple of-the-shelve metal stud frames are reimagined to make partitions that can be opened or closed as appropriated. The frames have infill panels in a variety of materials, responding to aesthetic and technical requirements of the spaces such as acoustics, comfort, transparency or enclosure.

Prominently placed near the entrance is a bar in emerald green marble, sourced from local quarries in Udaipur. The spatial characteristics of the original timber ceilings are highlighted with a dark blue colour that responds to the blue terrazzo floor laid out across the entire space. Bespoke brass pendants are hanging from the ceiling, lighting the space in a subtle and atmospheric way.

Sebatu Village House
2018–, Bali

Settled amongst sprawling rice paddies on the edge of the Sebatu village in Bali, the new guest houses are nestled on top of a steep hill that overlooks a lush valley and the Mount Agung volcano beyond. The houses are assembled as a series of rooms, pavilions, terraces and pools. Constructed in local stone, brick and timber they reflect the Balinese village both in its materiality and spatial configuration and seek a harmonious balance between the natural and made environment.
Site Practice - Sebatu Village House floor plan at 50.0 meter
Sebatu Village House floor plan at 50.0 meter
The houses carefully respond to what is already there, creating spaces that blend from inside to outside encouraging a way of life that aspires to co-exist with the natural surroundings in a more involved way. In between the structures, a series of gardens, courtyards, terraces and water bodies – designed in collaboration with landscape designers Andy Hamilton and Jem Hanbury – have been arranged to enhance the surrounding natural landscape.n

The subak, a local ecological irrigation system.
As part of the cultural landscape that surrounds the house, a network of waterways connects the pools and ponds of the new garden with the Subak – a local irrigation system that functions as a communal ecosystem and ties together the agrarian village society. The water, diverted from the rice paddies and fields located at the highest point of the plot, is directed through a series of channels and gutters creating vibrant and productive garden features and is eventually guided to a natural pond with a water temple at the foot of the hill, before the water is returned to its natural ecosystem.

The natural materials enriched with a natural patina.
Local building typologies and the surrounding natural landscape informed the approach to materials and details. Rather than placed on the site, the project is grounded in its place by giving each building and pavilion a plinth made of locally sourced stone akin to the temples and village houses of the island. On top of these bases, a composition of reclaimed timber columns and panels, brickwork enclosures and a timber joisted roof dressed with a fine-cut copper cladding are placed. Analogous to Balinese practice, the materials are applied with a precision adherent to local artisanry traditions, leaving the surfaces exposed to the elements so that they will accumulate layers of moss, grasses and fungi that enrich them with a natural patina over time.n

The design process included extensive use of models to understand typography and spatial relations. The models were tested on-site with 1:1 scale mockups in bamboo. Built together with local farmers and builders the mockups conveyed an in-depth understanding of the relationship between land and building, between envisioned spaces and their surroundings and between architects and builders.
The first phase of the project, which is currently under construction, is expected to be completed in early 2020.u003cbru003enu003cbru003enu003cbru003enClient: Privateu003cbru003enArchitects: Site Practiceu003cbru003enLandscape Designers: Jem Hanbury Studio u0026 Andy Hamilton Studiou003cbru003enStructural Engineers: Saka Undagiu003cbru003enProject Manager: Penjor Bali Mandiriu003cbru003enMain Contractor: Adi Jaya Utaman

Information

Site Practice is an architecture and design studio based in Mumbai and Amsterdam and was founded by Anne Geenen and David Schmidt in 2018. The studio approaches each project by committing to a collaborative design process engaging with makers and users from various backgrounds and disciplines. By engaging with the process of making and construction they explore material, cultural and ecological conditions, creating places and objects that have a strong emphasis on detail and become moments of quality in our daily lives. Current projects include guest houses in Bali, a boutique hotel on the coast of India, a housing project in Rotterdam and several interior and furniture projects.
